A BIT OF HISTORY

"The Old-Log School House" which stood near the present church site, was the first place of meeting of the congregation. For several years preaching was held on Saturday afternoon, once a month. Anxious to have a better place of worship, subscriptions were solicited in the Spencerville and Burtonsville communities: the community receiving the highest amount in subscriptions would be awarded the privilege of erecting the church. Burtonsville erected the church! The present ground was the original ground for this new church, formerly called, "Frog Pond", a part of the William Rich farm. The original cornerstone dates the church's erection as 1863. Upon its completion a regular preacher was assigned, holding services every other Sunday Morning. The alternate Sundays were supplied by the local ministers, Mr. Edgar Roby and Mr. Luther Breachears. The Sunday School was held in the basement of tho church, for many years without aid of musical instruments. In 1885 an organ was purchased for use in the sanctuary, with Miss Maggie Duvall as organist. The first trustees were: Mr. Lanahan, Mr. Isaac Burton, Mr. Louis Duvall, and Mr. William Phair. The Stewards were: Mr. James Nettle, Mr. Louis Duvall and Mr. William Phair. In 1921 the second addition was made, which now serves as the "over-flow" for worship, and the basement which is used for church school activities. The bell tower was also erected with this addition. In 1951 the third addition was erected, which includes new church-school rooms, church office and lavatory facilities. Also, in October of 1951, a lovely new parsonage was consecrated, "it's one of the finest parsonages in the conference". During the years, several remodelings were done on the church property. Within the last five years the chancel was remodeled making an attractive worship center. This year the over-flow has been painted. There's much work to be done. We are growing! We need a new church! ! Let's BUILD IT !!! The next ten years will make a hundred. Let's make them glorious.
