Local Ministries
Community
Services Committee
Sharon
Halverson
This committee coordinates and oversees a variety
of projects in the local community which provide a variety of assistance
to those in need. Some projects are ongoing, all year long, and
others take place only once a year. The people who coordinate these
projects and those who help them are showing Christ's love to others
in a most basic heartfelt way.
Descriptions of the current projects along with their
coordinators are listed below. The committee welcomes others in
the congregation who wish to share their ideas. Contact Sharon Halverson
if you are interested in serving in any capacity, or need more information.

Christmas in April
- Contact Stewart Seal
Volunteers perform home maintenance for a needy resident of Prince
George's County on the last Saturday in April, rain or shine. We
provide the money for purchase of materials for our assigned house
and the labor to do the repairs as assessed by House Captains. They
need skilled workers with carpentry, electrical and plumbing expertise
to organize into teams.

Eastern Montgomery Emergency
Assistance Network (EMEAN)
LGUMC continues to donate money which is distributed to people
facing eviction or utility cutoffs because they are unable to pay.
However, at this time, we do not have anyone to attend meetings
or represent our congregation
Elizabeth House and
Shepherd's Table - Coordinator Mark
Kohorst
Volunteers prepare and serve food to those in need on a regular
basis year round. Elizabeth House is in Laurel and Shepherd's Table
is in Silver Spring. Although there is a reliable corps of volunteers
for this service, new people are always welcome. We also distribute
bag lunches to those who come to dinner, so this is one task that
could be done by someone who cannot be present at dinner hour.
Habitat for Humanity
of Montgomery County - Coordinator Harris
Halverson
LGUMC has supported Habitat for Humanity's Burtonsville
project since 2006 through financial contributions and by organizing
church volunteers. Phase I of II was completed during the summer
of 2007, and Phase II is projected to be completed by the end of
2008. The 3rd Friday of every month is "LGUMC volunteer day"
at the site. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact
Harris Halverson. No construction or building experience is needed,
but you must be 18 years of age or older to participate. When the
project is complete, we stand ready to help on another project.
