Since the summer of 1997, teams of high school youth and adult leaders from Liberty Grove UMC have served as Christ’s hands and feet in communities throughout the Eastern and Central United States. The Mission Team size varies from year to year, but usually consists of about 35-40 youth (10th-12th grade) and 9-10 adults. Over the years, we’ve commissioned and sent out almost 500 mission workers in this program!

Workcamp is a week of service when approximately 400 youth and adults, from all around the country, come together in one location to repair and rebuild the homes of elderly, low income, and disabled people. Through their work, these teens are given the opportunity to live out their faith as they work with others to help those less fortunate. All work projects (there are usually between 50-70 major home repair jobs at a Workcamp) are performed with adult supervision; six-person crews are assigned according to the crew member’s skills and the specific needs of the project, and the crew has one week to complete their task. Projects can range from weatherizing and painting an entire home, to tearing down and/or rebuilding an unsafe porch, deck, or wheelchair ramp. It’s real work during the daylight hours. And then in the evenings, there’s time for worship, “hanging out,” devotions . . . and yes, we even squeeze in some sleep each night – on the classroom floor of the local high school or middle school, which is where we call “home” for the week.

Liberty Grove’s trip each summer includes a well-earned “day of fun” on our return trip from our mission work. In the past we’ve visited a waterpark, an amusement park, and a county fair demolition derby . . . we’ve gone white-water rafting, spelunking (caving), been to Niagara Falls, and even attended a Rascal Flatts concert.

Make no mistake – this is a fun week for the youth and adults – but it’s also serious work which challenges even the strongest servant. If you have any questions about the Liberty Grove Workcamp High School Mission Teams, please contact Don Hauprich.
